New Beginnings Optimal Health | Preparing To Quit
We understand that you “know” all the reasons to stop smoking or chewing but sometimes remembering is a challenge.
You may think chewing tobacco is not “as bad as smoking”, but think again.
Some health risks of chewing tobacco are:
• | oral (mouth) cancer | • | pancreatic cancer | • | addiction to nicotine | • | leukoplakia (white sores in the mouth that can lead to cancer) | • | receding gums (gums slowly shrink away from around the teeth) | • | bone loss around the roots of the teeth | • | abrasion (scratching and wearing down) of teeth | • | staining of teeth | • | bad breath |
Leukoplakia is a white sore or patch in the mouth that can become cancerous. Studies have consistently found high rates of leukoplakia at the place in the mouth where users place the "chew." One study found that almost 3 out of 4 of daily users of moist snuff and chewing tobacco had non-cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions (sores) in the mouth. The longer you use oral tobacco, the more likely you are to have leukoplakia.
Many regular smokeless tobacco users have receding gums and bone loss around the teeth. The surface of the tooth root may be exposed where gums have receded. Tobacco can irritate or destroy the gum tissue.
Smokeless tobacco may also play a role in heart disease and high blood pressure. Men who switched from cigarettes to snuff or chewing tobacco in a large American Cancer Society study had higher death rates from heart disease, stroke, cancer of the mouth and lung, and all causes of death combined than former smokers who stopped using all tobacco products. It is unclear whether the heart disease was caused by the smokeless products in this study, because there have been few large, long-term studies to identify health problems caused by these products.
The snuff and chewing tobacco products most widely used in the United States contain very high levels of tobacco-specific causing nitrosamines. These carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) cause lung cancer in animals, even when injected.
Inhaling tobacco smoke causes several immediate physical reactions:
• | Your heart rate begins to rise, increasing by as much as 30% | • | Nicotine raises your blood pressure, making your heart work harder to deliver oxygen | • | Carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke reduces your blood’s ability to carry oxygen |
Long term the effects are devastating:
• | About half of all Americans who continue to smoke will die because of the habit. Each year about 440,000 people in the United States die from illnesses related to cigarette smoking. | • | A cigarette smoker has 2-3 times the risk of having a heart attack than a nonsmoker | • | Smoking is one of the leading causes of coronary heart disease in the U.S. | • | Cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, suicide, AIDS, homicide, & illegal drugs | • | Women who use tobacco during pregnancy are more likely to have adverse birth outcomes | • | Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the U.S. despite the fact that it is the MOST PREVENTABLE cause of premature death in our society. | • | Only about half of the deaths related to smoking are from cancer. Smoking is also a major cause of aneurysms, bronchitis, emphysema, and stroke, and it makes pneumonia and asthma worse. | • | Smoking has also been linked to other health problems, including gum disease, cataracts, bone thinning, hip fractures, and peptic ulcers. It is also linked to macular degeneration, an eye disease that can cause blindness. | • | If smoking were discovered today, it would never pass any of the world’s health and safety requirements for human use. In fact, with the toxins smoking introduces into the body, cigarettes would be classed as a dangerous poison and would not be made available for public use. |
Nicotine is not only a physical addiction, it is also physiological:
• | The people who love you would like to keep you around as long as they can. | • | Anti-smoking laws are making it difficult to find a place to smoke making you feel like a criminal. | • | You’ll smell better. | • | You’ll feel better. | • | People will want to be closer to you. | • | You’ll be able to breathe better and lose the “smoker’s cough”. | • | Your smile will be brighter. | • | You’ll have a lot more free time. |
When you stop smoking you need to make the decision for yourself, but if you think you are not affecting your children:
• | According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 44.5 million US adults were current smokers in 2006. This is 20.8% of all adults (23.9% of men, 18.0% of women) -- more than 1 out of 5 people. | • | The numbers were higher in younger age groups. In 2006, CDC reported almost 24% of those 18 to 44 years old were current smokers, compared to 10.2% in those aged 65 or older. | • | Nationwide, 22.3% of high school students and 8.1% of middle school students were smoking in 2004. More White and Hispanic students smoked cigarettes. |
• | What activities or times of day cause you to crave a cigarette the most? About a week before your first laser treatment, begin eliminating your triggers one by one. Pick the one that you feel will be hardest for you to eliminate when quitting and try to do without (or delay) that cigarette. Shake up your routine. This will help you begin to break the habit before you actually quit. | • | Make an action plan for the first few days after treatment. Keep busy and active, especially during your trigger times. Exercise, go to the movies or see friends. | • | Calculate how much money you will save by not smoking. Put aside the money you aren’t spending on cigarettes and plan a reward for yourself. If you smoked even a pack a day, it can buy you that luxurious vacation or shopping spree you thought you couldn’t afford. | | • | Complete a detailed list of why you want to be free of cigarettes. Give specific reasons like “to be able to exercise without being out of breath”, not just general ones like “improved health”. Post it on your refrigerator. Regular reminders will help you be successful. To get you started, print and fill out our "Reasons I Want To Quit". |
New Beginnings Optimal Health | Nicotine Cessation | The Treatment
New Beginnings Optimal Health's "Stop Smoking" and "Stop Chewing" treatment programs have been very successful!

| The Treatment and the Alleviation of Withdrawal
The treatment is completely painless and only takes about an hour. We use a low level laser (also known as a therapeutic or cold laser) primarily on the auricular therapy points located on the ear. We also include a few additional points on the nose, wrists, hands, and forearms.
New Beginnings Optimal Health treatment concentrates on three areas; nicotine withdrawal, relaxation, and appetite suppression. The nicotine withdrawal helps to alleviate the physical withdrawal symptoms associated with nicotine.
CLICK HERE to view helpful tips before receiving your treatment. | According to The American Cancer Society, these can include, but are not limited to the following: • dizziness • depression • feelings of frustration and anger • irritability • trouble sleeping • trouble concentrating • restlessness • headache • tiredness • increased appetite
The relaxation portion of the treatment helps to keep the body and mind calm as you are beginning to make new associations as a former smoker.
Finally, the appetite suppression can help keep you from transferring nicotine to food. You are encouraged to eat healthy snacks to assist in this area.
Although the treatment is not FDA approved, New Beginnings Optimal Health uses cutting edge FDA cleared Cold Lasers. These lasers are cleared for pain therapy which New Beginnings Optimal Health utilizes to alleviate the pains of physical withdrawals. This treatment has no proven success rate in the United States; however as of July of 2006 70% of our clients were referred to New Beginnings Optimal Health, which speaks volumes to our success.

“It doesn't matter if you try and try and try again, and fail. It does matter if you try and fail, and fail to try again.” -- Charles Kettering CLIENT BENEFITS:
It is believed that most people who successfully stop smoking or chewing tobacco try and fail 4 to 7 times before they are successful. Immediate results can help keep us motivated.
Although most benefits from quitting smoking happen internally, there are some immediate and visible results you can look forward to.
Quitting helps stop the damaging effects of tobacco on your appearance including:
• Premature wrinkling of the skin • Bad breath • Stained teeth • Gum disease • Bad smelling clothes and hair • Yellow fingernails | |
Kicking the tobacco habit also offers benefits that you'll notice immediately and some that will develop gradually in the first few weeks. These rewards can improve your day-to-day life substantially:
• Food tastes better • Sense of smell returns to normal • Ordinary activities no longer leave you out of breath (i.e. climbing stairs, light housework)
IN ADDITION:
Within 20 minutes after quitting: Your blood pressure drops to a level close to that before the last cigarette. The temperature of your hands and feet increases to normal. (US Surgeon General's Report,1988, pp. 39, 202)
After 8 Hours after quitting: The carbon monoxide level in the blood drops to normal. (US Surgeon General's Report,1988, p. 202)
After 24 hours after quitting: Your chance of heart attack decreases. (US Surgeon General's Report,1988, p. 202)
Within 2 Weeks to 3 Months after quitting: Your circulation improves and your lung function is increased up to 30%. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, pp.193,194,196,285,323)
1 to 9 Months after quitting: Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decreases; Cilia (tiny hair like structures that move mucus out of the lungs) regain normal function in the lungs, increaseing the ablilty to handle mucus, clean the lungs and reduce infection. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, pp. 304, 307, 319, 322)
1 Year after quitting: The risk of coronary heart disease decreases and is half that of a smoker's. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, p. vi)
5 Years after quitting: Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker 5-15 years after quitting. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, p.79)
10 Years after quitting: The lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker's. The risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas decrease. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, p.110, 147, 152, 155, 159,172)
15 Years after quitting: The risk of coronary heart disease is that of a nonsmoker's. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, p.79)
 | The prospect of better health is a major reason for quitting, but there are others as well. Smoking is expensive. The economic costs of smoking are estimated to be about $3,391 per smoker per year.
Do you really want to continue burning up your money with nothing to show for it except possible health problems.

New Beginnings Optimal Health | Laser FAQ's
Is laser therapy safe?
Laser therapy is completely safe. The FDA has classified low-level laser therapy devices as "non-significant risk medical devices." They pose no health risk to the patient provided when protective eyewear is worn. We recommend you contact your physician if you have any questions.
1. How many treatments do you need?
For most people only one treatment is needed. However, we do offer booster treatments within the first 6 months at no additional cost. Please call the office to discuss the details of our booster policy.
2. How long does the treatment take and when do you start feeling it?
The treatment takes about 20 minutes and most feel the effects of the laser immediately. Though you should expect to be at the office for about 40 minutes.
3. How do you feel once you are treated?
The treatment is very relaxing and some people experience a degree of drowsiness.
4. Does insurance cover this?
We do not take insurance, but we would be happy to give you some information to submit along with your receipt to your insurance company. Some insurance companies will reimburse for the treatment under needleless smoking cessation. Plus we will provide billing codes for our procedure.
5. How does the laser work?
The light energy of the laser is absorbed by skin and cells by stimulation of tender points. It triggers your body to go into a constant release of endorphins, which makes your body feel like it has just had a cigarette.
6. Where do you place the laser?
The laser is placed on tender points on the body around the ears, nose, hands, wrists, and forearm.
7. How long does the feeling of not needing a cigarette last after the treatment?
For most people, the physical cravings are gone for good. You will still have the mental habits to break, but we give you some great tips on how to break those habits as well.
8. If I have a medical condition, can I still be treated?
If you are pregnant or have experienced seizures, we regret that we are not able to treat you at this time. If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact your doctor before being treated.

We have had no problems with any clients that had a pacemaker, though we would suggest that you contact your doctor prior to being treated.
10. Is the treatment performed by a doctor?
No, it is performed by a laser technician.
11. I have never heard of this treatment, who else does this?
This type of procedure has been available in Europe and Canada for over 20 years. We have been open since August 2004.

We accept MasterCard, Visa, and cash.
13. How far in advance do I have to schedule my appointment?
It depends on the location, so please call or e-mail us for scheduling information.
14. I usually smoke when I drink. After the treatment, will I still want to smoke when I drink?
We recommend that you avoid your alcohol intake for the first few days after the treatment. You may also want to avoid situations that trigger old smoking habits for a few days. You should limit your caffeine intake for the first few days as well.
15. Why should you choose New Beginnings Laser Therapy over other laser centers?
We were the first to bring this treatment to Nevada, northern New Jersey, North Carolina, Illinois, Indiana, northern California, Oklahoma, Mexico, and Louisiana.
